On the great facts that are happening in Italy and in the world, the information that comes to us from the newspapers is scarce and mostly manipulated. This is due, especially in Italy, to the vertical fall of professionalism in journalism, at all its levels. Journalists in the last twenty years have lost their independence and ideologies have been replaced by great systems of power that are able to control the flow of news in a minute and deep way and to carry out their biased correction. Journalists who do not accept the new law are marginalized. However excluded from the machine, which must be perfect and oiled. It is a very big problem, and it is probably the essential knot in the affair of democracy. I would like to reflect for a moment on five recent events. The summit of Samarkand, yesterday’s warning of Berlusconi to Salvini And Melons, the pope’s speech on the war, the very long funeral of the Queen of England, the sanctions against Russia.

1) Let’s start from Samarkand. That is, from the meeting of a group of countries gathered around Russia And China, who establish an alliance and collaboration between them on an economic and strategic level. It is not a meeting between friends. Those who participate represent about 50 percent of the world population. And it has strong political and economic influence over another 25 percent of the world’s population. The group from Samarkand, which brings together about thirty countries, has asked to join another twenty countries. The alliance starts fromAsia but it is about to expand to various other continents. Well, the newspapers don’t tell you about this. They don’t tell you what happened in Samarkand. They do not explain that today there are two strong blocks in the world, a very large one, this one in Samarkand, and a smaller one, the one that has tightened around Washington (and of which Italy is part) which represents about a billion people. that is, roughly 15 percent of the world population. What do the newspapers say? That Putin was humiliated. Stop. The order of the team, as always, is given by the “Courier”, which has now become a kind of “Leading State”.

In its online edition it launches the watchword: humiliated. Because? Why the China it has not declared war on Ukraine. But was this the theme of Samarkand? No. It wasn’t even on the agenda.Ukraine. And had anyone ever said that the China could intervene militarily in Ukraine? Never. Nobody. So? And so it is. The choice is that in international politics two things are important. The first is to make believe that the world is the West, only the West, nothing but the West. Meaning by the West the Use, who command, the Japan, which is on the edge, and then the Canada, L‘Australia and theEurope, that sketch. The second important thing is that Putin is absolute evil, and that he loses, loses, and loses. No other reading of the facts of the world is allowed. No question. In line, journalist friends, pace, cadence and silence.

2) The other morning the parties of Salvini And Melons they dissociated, in European Parliament, by the pro-European parties and voted in defense of Viktor Orban, the Hungarian leader whom Europe wants to condemn and exclude because his regime is not considered democratic. At seven in the evening a resounding reply from Berlusconi: if the new government is not pro-European Come on Italy will not be part of it. Earthquake in the right. Obvious risk of breakage. A sensational twist in the electoral campaign and in the political scenario. By far the most important political news of the past couple of months. Well, the news is chosen as the first news only by five newspapers, (all the others ignore it, or put it in a very small way, with the same relief as an interview with Speranza), but of these five newspapers, four of them are titled in so that you don’t understand.

I copy the titles: Courier:Challenge on Orban and Russian money “. Whose, among whom, why? I don’t know. The print:“Meloni and Salvini with Orban. Shame”. Who says this sentence? Read. The Truth: “The EU nut to democracy”. The poster: “The European Parliament condemns Orban“. The only newspaper that explains what happened this time is Repubblica: “The right splits on Orban”. Because? How can this general glamor be explained? I have the impression that it is due to a very simple fact: lack of orders. The news of Berlusconi who threatened to break with the allies arrived in the evening and was unexpected. Unexpected news is usually the bread for journalists. They create an atmosphere of excitement in the newsrooms. Unless… Here, unless the order is to always stay covered. I remember that thirty years ago at the Unification we young people engaged in a fierce battle. That we won. Battle to break the mold of those who wanted to bend the news to the party line. Of the PCI. And therefore be cautious, haggle. I remember when the news came, at seven in the evening, that the Berlin Wall was falling – I was the editor-in-chief – many old journalists came to me to beg me to break the news with sobriety, small headlines and vague news. They told me: then tomorrow we will go back after hearing the party. I did not listen to him and, as was obvious, full-page headlines in block letters: “The Berlin Wall has fallen”. We are back to the order of ideas of those old journalists. Modesty. If it took us a few months to become Melonians and prepare us for the new power – they say – it will certainly not be news of the evening that will blow everything up.

3) The pope spoke about many things the other night. And, as is his habit, he again spoke out against war and asked for peace initiatives. To those who asked him if, however, the Ukrainians had the right to defense, he replied – obviously – yes. And that became the headline of all the newspapers. “The pope says yes to the line of arming the Ukrainians”. Is it a journalistic stretch? No, it is the reversal of the pope’s thinking. For what reason? Why on the question of war in Ukraine, and the new cold war between the US and the USSR, the Italian press is militarized. Who transgresses, a week of delivery.

4) The whole world – everyone writes – reverently celebrates the queen. The whole world? Well, let’s say a part of the West. In the remaining four-fifths of the world, nobody gives a damn about the queen. But that’s the way it is now: the world is West, the rest doesn’t matter. Do you know what the British used to say once? “Storm on the Channel, Europe is isolated ”. Well, we’re at that point.

5) The sanctions. The sanctions to the Russia theAmerica. Europe obeyed. The sanctions certainly affect Russia but, probably, to a lesser degree than the damage they cause in Europe. And they can lead to the most serious economic and social crisis in European history since the two world wars. Who gains from the sanctions? The United States, certainly, and some individual European states, for example the Norway, which makes billions with energy prices. I simply say that the information system in Italy is not in crisis: it has a flat electroencephalogram. The problem is not fake news. It is the journalistic regime. And in these conditions it is very difficult, very, very difficult, to make democracy work.

Professional journalist since 1979, he worked for almost 30 years at the Unit of which he was deputy director and then co-director. Director of Liberation from 2004 to 2009, then of Calabria Now from 2010 to 2013, in 2016 he moved to Il Dubbio and then landed in the direction of Il Riformista returned to newsstands on 29 October 2019.
