US women’s basketball star Brittney Griner has been transferred to a penal colony in the Russian region of Mordovia: Reuters reports it on its website in an exclusive. In August she the athlete was sentenced to nine years in prison for possession of drugs. The Biden administration has begun negotiations for her release, through a prisoner exchange.

Griner had been transferred on Nov. 4 from a Moscow detention center to an undisclosed prison. Russian authorities gave no information for nearly two weeks, but the Reuters Source said she was taken to the IK-2 women’s penal colony in Yavas, about 500km south of Moscow. The colony is located in Mordovia, the same region where another American, Paul Whelan, is serving 16 years in a different prison after being convicted of espionage charges he denies.
