Donald Trump had taken a similar step in 2018. Israel has always considered Jerusalem as its capital, but this is not recognized by the international community
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
LONDON – The British neo-premier Liz Truss
is considering moving the UK embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem – a move that would represent a reversal of the traditional British position and which would put the London government in the wake of Donald Trumpwhich had taken a similar step back in 2018 (and which was not later contradicted by Biden).
Liz Truss has put Israeli Prime Minister Lapid aside during a meeting the two had yesterday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Israel has always considered Jerusalem as its capital, but this is not recognized by the international community, so much so that all embassies are located in Tel Aviv (with the exception of Guatemala, Honduras and Kosovo). Palestinians also consider Jerusalem to be their capital.
Britain had been one of 128 countries that voted in favor of one UN resolution condemning Trump’s decision and which appealed to all member states not to move their embassies. Truss’s move therefore comes as a surprise and it is likely that he will clash with the opposition of the Foreign Office diplomats.
But the British premier has a precise strategy in mind, which does not only concern the Middle East: as she illustrated in her speech to the UN, you see a global clash between democracies and autocracies taking place, with respect to which it is necessary to set up a network of freedom capable of opposing the Russian and Chinese dictatorships. From this point of view, Israel is an important ally: and the fact that London would like to conclude a trade agreement with the Jewish state also plays a role..
