Dang Van Hien during the trial
September 17, 2022:
Vietnamese President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc has commuted Dang Van Hien’s death sentence to life imprisonment, Hien’s wife Mai Thi Khuyen told Radio Free Asia on September 15, 2022.
Hien was sentenced to death by the Dak Nong People’s Court in January 2018 for shooting Long Son Company employees who had come to confiscate his home and land in October 2016. Three people were killed and 13 injured in the ‘accident.
“[Sono] extremely happy and moved. Everyone in our family applauded, relatives from both sides and friends, everyone is sending us their congratulations, ”Khuyen told RFA.
She said that since her husband’s arrest, her family has encountered considerable financial difficulties. She had to work as a farmer to support her family and compensate the victims of the accident.
Hien’s case has been widely controversial in Vietnam, where authorities regularly authorize private companies to appropriate land for large-scale projects, often at the expense of individual landowners. The Ho Chi Minh City High People’s Court upheld Hien’s sentence in an appeal trial six months after his death sentence.
Luu Binh Nhuong, the deputy head of the National Assembly’s People’s Aspirations Committee, said in October 2019 that he had filed a petition from Hien’s lawyers asking for leniency from his committee, in Nguyen Phu Trong, who at the time was president of Vietnam, state media reported.
The petition described Hein as a hard-working farmer with no criminal record and claimed that the shooting was the result of the emotional distress, anger and pressure that Long Son Company employees, including the victims, had exerted on Hien in his home. The petition claimed that employees had carried out an illegal eviction despite Hien’s protests.
In July 2018, then Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang publicly asked the Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate and the Ministry of Public Security to investigate the case of Dang Van Hien.
The revision of the sentence, which commutes Hien’s death sentence to life imprisonment, appears to end a years-long trial that has attracted the attention of Vietnamese citizens across the country, many of whom have expressed discontent with the land grabbing policies of the country. government.
