Google Messages is finally catching up with other chat apps by setting up a way to reply directly to RCS messages – here’s a first look at replies in action.
About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we have unzipped the latest version of an app that Google has uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APK files, in the case of Android apps), we can see several lines of code within this tip in possible future features. Please note that Google may or may not provide these features and our interpretation of what they are may be incomplete. We will try to allow those who are about to finish, however, to clarify what they will look like if they upload. With that in mind, read on.
Over the years, text messaging and instant messaging have become the primary ways to talk to each other. A minor problem that can occur is that in fast-paced chats, such as a crowded group chat, it’s not always easy to determine which message someone is replying to.
Every modern chat app has solved this problem in one way or another. Slack offers threads to keep the discussion of a topic separate from the rest of the discussion in the room. Other apps like iMessage and Discord simply let you select a message to reply to and usually add much-needed flair and context to your message when you send it.
Our team took a closer look at Google Messages and took a similar approach to replies, with a reply arrow icon that appears when you long-press a particular message. Clicking this icon places the message above the compose bubble and a Cancel button in case you change your mind, otherwise you can type your message normally.
Update 10:55: With a little experimentation, we’ve found another way to initiate an RCS response is to pass a message to the side, which adds the same response arrow icon. An example can be seen in the gallery below.
The feature appears to be quite under development to successfully send and receive replies via RCS, with replies displayed in the Google Messages web app. Just as you’d expect, a message with a reply includes a preview of the original message and the sender’s name. By clicking on this reply preview, the Google messages will scroll to the original.CopyAMP code.
Even better, you may not have to wait long before replies are fully available in Google Messages, as some have said that You already live for them. – Thanks Matteo and Kunal!
The ability to reply is just one of the many new features currently being rolled out in Google Messages. Just yesterday we discovered a file transcribing voice messages A feature that works surprisingly well, along with the ability to use any emoji as an RCS response. It is very clear that Google has a plan to create Google Messages as it is Double on making RCS the next great messaging standard.
Thanks for JEB Decompiler of which some Insight APK disassemblers exploit.
