“If they don’t pay me I’ll throw myself down”. Moments of fear at Magliana, where a 46-year-old worker threatened to commit suicide. The facts date back to the late morning of Wednesday 14 September and took place in the area of the eastern outskirts of Rome. The man, an Egyptian citizen who works as a laborer, got on a crane in street of Villa Bonelliwhere a construction site has been set up for some interventions at number 19, saying that he wanted to throw himself into the void, an extreme gesture as a sign of protest against the fact that they are not paying him.

The episode is one of the many stories involving workers in various sectors in Italy, underpaid, exploited, forced to extra work with more hours than they should or different jobs and, as in this case, deprived of pay. One of the many tragedies that afflict the workers, which fortunately at least in this juncture, culminated with the rescue and transport of the man to the hospital.

The firefighters convinced him to get out

The alarm was raised by passers-by, who heard the worker screams of protest and who, looking up to the sky, saw him hovering, 50 meters high. Worried that he might take his own life, they immediately called the Single Emergency Number 112 and requested urgent intervention from the police and health personnel. The images were published by the vice president of the Rome XI Municipal Council Marco Palma: “It seems he is a job worker of a subcontract company, who would not have been paid. Let’s hope it ends well”, reads his Facebook profile.

On the spot, given the nature of the intervention, the arrival of the firefighters was necessary, who worked with teams 11A, 7A, 3A, SAF and the carroteli. The firefighters managed to reach him and after three hours of dialogue, they convinced him to get off. Entrusted to the care of health personnel, he was transported to the hospital to undergo the appropriate treatment. The police officers of the State Police and the San Paolo police station were present.
