According to some viewers, the background activities during the announcement of the Queen’s death on the BBC have diminished the solemnity of the moment. BBC News had cut off regular programming and visibly moved reporter Huw Edwards announced her Majesty’s disappearance. But behind him, on the right side of the screen, are two editorial employees holding their phones and appearing to take photos and videos of the historic moment. For more than 20 seconds they hold their smartphones aloft, although it is unclear whether they were taking photos of the scene in front of them or selfies of themselves in the central London studio. Attentive viewers immediately voiced their complaints on Twitter. “While Huw Edwards was announcing the Queen’s death on BBC News, reporters in the office in the background were taking selfies and photos of Huw. Have some respect,” commented one user. A second added: “I’m not sure the BBC bosses will be happy with the people in the background taking pictures of Huw Edwards with their phones during the announcement.”
