All parties agree on the gas price ceiling at European level. The problem is the timing: at EU level there is still no agreement and there is a risk of going on for a long time. But citizens can no longer wait and leaders are asking the government to take immediate action on their bills.
Only a few days ago the European Union announced that it was working on a Community proposal on gas price cap, in order to counteract the increases in the bill that are bringing households and businesses to their knees. The European Commission is actually drawing up a plan made up of five different measures against the energy crisis: precisely on that of the gas price ceiling, in reality, the Member States would remain divided. “On the roof at the price the road is marked and Berlin shares it. The proposal will arrive by September. We work for a majority“, assured the Minister of Ecological Transition, Roberto Cingolani, in an interview with Repubblica. And in the meantime?
In Italy, all political forces are almost in agreement on the need to impose a ceiling on the price of gas. The problem, however, is the timing. The increases in the bill have been weighing on the shoulders of citizens for weeks, if not months, and there are those who can no longer wait. On the bills the government had announced an intervention that should have arrived this week, but things are destined to go a little longer than expected. In fact, in the last Cdm the programmatic objectives of public finance have been defined and a passage in the Chamber is still needed to use the foreseen resources. Which, for the most part, have been allocated in the new Aid decree, with which the government intends to counteract the increases in the bill for families and businesses.
And in the meantime? “There energy question that must find answers both at European and national level. If the European responses are late, the national responses must be stronger“, commented the secretary of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta. Which asks the government, in addition to the gas price ceiling, also “a regime of administered prices for electricity with the decoupling of fossil and renewable sources; and then the doubling of the tax credit for businesses and a new ‘social electricity bill’ contract for small businesses and families with medium and low incomes; finally, a great plan for renewables and energy saving can no longer be postponed“..
Matteo Salvini, for its part, continues to ask for an immediate budget shift. “For the League, the emergency is the electricity and gas bill, they continue to ask all the other parties to give us a hand and stop the increase in bills. Those who say no, those who waste time, those who postpone, do not love this country. If Europe does not put a ceiling, if Europe does not make a contribution, the Italian government has a duty to intervene immediately. I recall a disaster worse than Covid, it amazes me that someone does not understand it, that they live on Mars. Anyone who refuses to intervene now by putting all the money necessary to block electricity and gas bills does not love Italy“,CopyAMP code
