To combat the increases in bills alternative solutions are sought in view of winter. But heating the house will be a drain: pellets and wood reach stellar prices. A bag of pellets it costs twice as much as last year. Even families who don’t use the gas to warm up, therefore, during the coming winter they will have to deal with an exponential increase in costs. Those consumers who decide to stock up on pellets at the end of the summer have already noticed this, trying to take advantage of prices lower than the winter ones: a package that last year cost 5 euros, today it costs 10-12 euros.

The pellet

And it is not excluded that with the arrival of the colder months these prices may increase further. “That of heating – explains Cristian Marchello, of Codacons Lecce – is one of the sectors that is already most affected by the increases, both as regards gas and for those who use convectors, therefore electricity, or pellet boilers. . In the latter case, that of pellets, families find themselves damaged and mocked: many consumers had invested to convert their plants, precisely for greater savings, and now they have to face a doubling of costs. This situation creates even more difficulties for average families, who have to cope with the increases recorded in all other sectors, from food to services ».

The increases in the cost of pellets, Marchello continues, derive indirectly “from the sanctions applied to Russia due to the war with Ukraine. Italy imports pellets from some European countries such as Germany and Austria, which in turn imported the raw material, timber, from Russia. Having blocked imports, the availability of raw materials and with it the supply of pellets on the market has decreased. Hence the increase in prices ». There is also the blocking of Belarusian flows and the reduction of imports from Ukraine, which together with the stop to imports from Russia caused a reduction of the Italian pellet market by at least 10 percent. The bans on imports, which affect the entire timber sector, prevent Europe from counting on the enormous quantities of processing waste from which the pellets were produced. At the European level, a decrease of about three million tons of product is estimated. There are countries, such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, which have introduced measures aimed at protecting their internal market. But the war is not the only cause of the increases: “There is also the problem of inflation which is skyrocketing and, moreover, there is a lot of speculation on the financial energy markets. Overall, all these factors do nothing but cause disproportionate increases which, in the end, fall on families ».

.

Firewood

The increases are also felt on the costs of wood to burn. As the Italian Agroforestry Energy Association explains on its «Energy from wood» portal, «deep difficulties are also faced by the logistics of distribution of goods, still afflicted by the regulations and consequences of the pandemic (including the endemic shortage of road hauliers, exacerbated by the Ukrainian war ) and some distortions of world trade “. “Unfortunately – adds Marchello – families have no solutions in hand. What is needed is top-down intervention to prevent speculation on the financial energy market, to contain inflation and also to diversify supplier countries and expand the timber market in Italy. But this is a long-term operation. The current government crisis does nothing but block any initiative aimed at containing the price increases ». A suggestion, however, comes from the Italian Agroforestry Energy Association: “It is useful for consumers to continue to plan their purchases wisely and in advance together with their trusted retailers, so as not to concentrate their purchases in one period of the year. winter, in which market tensions could make it difficult to find the material ».
