Blood continues to stain the sidewalks of New York City: at the crack of dawn on Thursday, a 25-year-old girl was shot to the head in theEast Village in Manhattan, in the heart of the Big Apple university nightlife.
Police intervened around 5:00 am after receiving reports of gunshots near East 14th Street and Union Square. According to some witnesses, the victim was hit by a man dressed in black, who covered his face with a mask so as not to be recognized.
The young woman was pronounced dead on the scene, and it is still unclear whether she is a student from nearby New York University (which has the bulk of its campuses in the neighborhood). The identity of the attacker and the reasons for the crime are not yet known, on which the NYPD detectives are working.
A few hours earlier, on Wednesday evening, another couple of episodes of violence plagued the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, in Midtown West. There, within half an hour, two 20-year-olds were stabbed in two separate assaults within a few blocks of each other.
The first attack occurred around 7:20 pm on West 50th Street, where a 28-year-old was stabbed in the back by an assailant, later identified as Nickolas Okeefe, 33 years old, local resident. After fleeing to Ninth Avenue, a half hour later the same attacker shot a 27-year-old woman on 47th Street in the chest. The latter has sustained injuries of medium severity, but she is recovering like the boy.CopyAMP code.
Police believe that both attacks are of a random nature.
