It is located near Stradella dell’Isola, next to the civic museum
Open controversy in the City Council for a motion presented by the group “Per una grande Vicenza” which wanted to change the plaque for Giacomo Matteotti in the square of the same name asking that the wording become “Anti-fascist martyr” rather than a politician. The majority, considering the proposal instrumental, especially in the electoral campaign, and explaining that the condemnation of “every form of totalitarianism” on their part is out of the question, as well as repeated, rejected the proposal signed by Dalla Rosa, Marobin and Spiller.
Few know, however, that there is not only the plaque for Matteotti on the Palazzo del Territorio, near the Olimpico, where he is indicated as a “politician” but there is another one, on the other side of the square, which underlines how Matteotti was “Martyr of freedom”. It is a marble plaque, placed at the time of the name, near the small road of the island, above the current pet shop. It is certainly not the wording requested, but it is quite clear in recalling the value of the martyrdom of the socialist exponent killed by the fascists in 1924.
