At the start of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Starkiller Base obliterates Hosnian Prime and, thus, some of Alderaan’s last memorials. The First Order followed in its predecessor’s footsteps by creating yet another planet-destroying base (although the first two ended in failure). However, it only took one hit from Starkiller Base to make this planet destroyer more effective than both of the Empire’s Death Stars combined. The first Death Star only managed to destroy Alderaan before the Rebellion brought it down, and the second Death Star didn’t get a chance to destroy any planets. However, Starkiller Base was able to destroy five entire planets in the Hosnian system, including Hosnian Prime.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series made the destruction of Alderaan much worse by showing how beautiful the planet was. In addition to the Death Star destroying the beautiful scenery, an estimated two billion people were also killed. This number completely pales in comparison to how many people died on Hosnian Prime and its surrounding system, which was roughly 100 times the amount of people who lived on Alderaan. Hosnian Prime, the capital of the New Republic, had memorials to Alderaan and some of those who perished in its destruction. Hundreds of thousands of people have passed these memorials to the fallen of Alderaan without even realizing they were about to suffer the same fate.

The destruction of Hosnian Prime meant the return of the Empire

The destruction of Hosnian Prime brought back the sad fate of Alderaan in Star Wars to the minds of everyone in the galaxy. Pablo Hidalgo’s Star Wars Propaganda: A History of Persuasive Art in the Galaxy reveals that there was actually a statue dedicated to Bail Organa in Senate Square. Created by a Bith artist named Janyor, this statue was possibly one of the last remaining mementos of Bail in the galaxy, aside from the remnants of the planet itself. Not only did the First Order wipe out Hosnian Prime and the New Republic in one fell swoop, they erased the last memories of Alderaan as well.

While their erasures are similar, there are also notable differences when comparing how the Empire and the First Order destroyed their enemies. The destruction of Alderaan was Palpatine’s mistake as he underestimated how the galaxy would react. In her haste to make a statement of power, he revealed his superweapon too soon, resulting in its destruction. On the other hand, the First Order cut straight to the chase by obliterating the capital of the New Republic, silencing their enemies from the outset.

The destruction of Hosnian Prime was a subtle attack on Leia Organa

Having served as a senator in the New Republic and having served on Hosnian Prime, Leia was no doubt familiar with the charters dedicated to her adoptive father and her home planet. When the First Order destroyed Hosnian Prime, she must have come to the sad realization that she was one of the few people left who remembered Bail Organa and what Alderaan was like. By decimating Hosnian Prime, Star Wars ameliorates the tragedy of Alderaan by reminding Leia of one of the darkest moments of her life. Despite the abundance of callbacks to A New Hope in The Force Awakens, the destruction of the New Republic is by far the most chilling.
