The developers of Overwatch 2 officially confirmed that the new game will replace the original one at the time of publication, scheduled for October 4, 2022. The information was shared via an AMA (Ask Me Anything) conducted via Reddit by Aaron Keller, director of the shooter.

“When Overwatch 2 is released on October 4, it will be a replacement for the current Live service,” he confirmed. Essentially, this means that the original Overwatch will no longer be playable from October. We already know that Overwatch 2 will include the contents of the first chapter, but adding new maps and new game systems. We also remember Overwatch 2 will be free to play, so there are no problems related to payments: the transition is completely free.

The transition from Overwatch to Overwatch 2, however, it brings with it a change: the 6 vs 6 should disappear, in favor of the 5 vs 5 of the second chapter. Initially, the developers’ plan was to make the two versions coexist, allowing owners of the first chapter to play the second together. However, given that the matches have gone from twelve to ten players, it is clear that cross-play had become impossible.

Finally, we know that Overwatch 2 will still include a triple A narrative campaign.
