Everything is ready for the 18th edition of the Aon Open Challenger – Memorial Giorgio Messina, the international tennis tournament in Genoa that will begin on Sunday 18 September 2022 with the qualifications at the clay courts of Valletta Cambiaso with a Total Financial Commitment (prize money + registration ) of 185 thousand dollars. A week of great tennis that will end on Sunday 25 September with the singles and doubles finals. In the meantime, the Wild Card was assigned to the Organizing Committee: in Genoa, the Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas, number 40 in the world and already 17th in the ATP ranking, was present.

An extraordinary level player who enriches this edition of the tournament even more. After two years of stoppage due to COVID, the Genoa tournament presents an entry list of absolute prestige as evidenced by the presence of players who in their career have won a total of 15 titles on the ATP World Tour 250 circuit. In particular, four victories for Ramos. and Pablo Andujar, three wins for Marco Cecchinato (already number 16 in the world and semifinalist at Roland Garros in 2018), two signed by Federico Delbonis and one each for Roberto Carballes Baena and Dusan Lajovic. In the entry list there are a top 70 and three top 80s: overall they are the 6 top 100 who will perform in Valletta Cambiaso. So a top 70 like the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro (number 67 in the world) and among the top 80 also the Spaniards Bernabé Zapata Miralles (number 79) and Carballés Baena (80th in the world ranking). The Serbian tennis player Lajović (88th in the world ranking) and the Spaniard Andújar (92nd in the world) were also illustrious. Among the big names also the Argentine Federico Delbonis, already number 33 in the world. At least nine Azzurri in the race, in addition to Cecchinato there is also expectation for Gianluca Mager. The Main Draw will be enriched by other big players with the other two Wild Cards that belong to players indicated by the FIT.

Also this year the tournament (awarded in 2014 as the best Challenger in the world and in 2018 and 2019 as the best Italian Challenger) will be directed by Sergio Palmieri, Director of the Internationals of Rome. And as always the Aon Open Challenger – Memorial Giorgio Messina represents an extraordinary showcase for the young talents of world tennis as it had already happened in the past with and Stefanos Tsitsipas (who triumphed in 2017), Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego (winner in 2018) and 2019). In fact, the presence of Taiwanese talent Chun-Hsin Tseng, another top 100 and number 88 in the world rankings, and the Italian Francesco Passaro stand out in the entry list, who are in the running to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals 2022 which brings together the best eight young Under-21s of the ATP Tour season. And in the special Pepperstone ATP Race To Milan ranking (where Tseng and Passaro are respectively in eighth and ninth place) that will determine the participants in the Next Gen ATP Finals 2022 also the blues Giulio Zeppieri and Matteo Arnaldi who will be present in Genoa.
“We are going to attend a great tennis event that has grown in relevance and importance for years, making Genoa and Liguria protagonists in this sport thanks also to the many talents who have passed and will pass from here – comments Simona Ferro Councilor for Sport of the Liguria Region – we cannot forget that in the last two years the few events held have often been penalized mainly by the absence of the public, the beating heart of every sporting event. Sport constitutes an important and fundamental part of our life, an all-round psycho-physical enrichment for those who practice it and for those who watch it, revealing its value that is not limited to just the athletic gesture, the beautiful volley, the great backhand and the winning ace, but above all to the joy of sharing which is sociability and inclusion.

“We are extremely happy and proud to offer the public of Valletta Cambiaso such a prestigious parterre of tennis players – explains Mauro Iguera, President of the Organizing Committee – there are players of absolute experience who have won several titles of the ATP World Tour 250 circuit and who have reached the top positions of the world rankings such as Marco Cecchinato and Pablo Andjuar. In addition, Genoa also this year confirms itself as a springboard for young talents such as Chun-Hsin Tseng and Francesco Passaro who are among the best Under 21s in the world and will be able to be protagonists in the Milan finals scheduled for November. And a spectacular tournament is announced also in the doubles with some world-class specialists. Thanks to all the sponsors who make the resumption of the event possible, reconfirming with unchanged enthusiasm the support that has allowed us to reach the 18th edition by offering a show of an ever higher level ”.

An eco-sustainable vision of sport for the Genoa Challenger: eliminated the 13,000 plastic water bottles used up to the last edition, in 2019. Thanks to the renewed collaboration with Esosport, the entire tournament staff and players will be provided with water bottles. aluminum. Only the plastic bottles will be used for the players during the matches and will be subsequently conferred in the appropriate containers for recycling. Furthermore, thanks to the Esosport balls (“Return your ace”) project, the Challenger of Genoa adheres to the collection and recycling of exhausted tennis balls, minimizing their environmental impact.
