Suspension decided by the Independent Ethics Committee which is investigating “multiple referrals of alleged wrongdoing in three separate cases”

Lightning bolt from the blue in Italian swimming just a few weeks after the Azzurri triumphs at the European Championships in Rome. The world federation has in fact suspended the president of Federnuoto with immediate effect, Paolo Barelli. The suspension was made official by the Finawith a press release explaining that this is a “provisional suspension with immediate effect”, decided by the Independent Ethics Committee which “is currently investigating multiple referrals of alleged offenses in three separate cases” against Barelli, who – he recalls – in addition to being currently president of the Italian Federnuoto, he was also a member of the Fina bureau and president of the Ligue Europeenne de Natation (Len).

“The allegations of wrongdoing investigated by the Ethics Committee include potential multiple violations of the rules of the Constitution and of the Fina Code of Ethics”. The Committee, the note continues, “resolved to impose a temporary suspension on Mr. Barelli that precludes him from exercising any function and participating in any activity within Fina, the continental organizations of Fina and the member federations of Fina. “. Following this suspension, Barelli “is not eligible to hold the position of president of the Italian Swimming Federation during its provisional suspension”, which “will remain in force until all ongoing issues with the Fina Ethics Committee are resolved”.
