From the unique joy of childbirth to drama. It is a tragic story, the one that took place in the gynecology department of thePertini hospital From Rome. The facts, reconstructed today from the Roman edition of Corriere della Sera, date back to the evening of January 7 last year. A 30-year-old Italian woman gave birth to a boy from three days. Joy, a thousand emotions and tiredness mix, as in the unique experience of every new mother. On the third day of the baby’s life, the young woman takes him back in her arms to breastfeed him, in her hospital room: it is late afternoon. But shortly after falls asleepwith the newborn at the breast. His weight is probably crushing him. A few hours later, upon awakening, the tragic surprise. The infirmary on duty in the ward goes around the rooms, and immediately notices something out of place. It’s just after midnight. The reality is tragic but inescapable: the child lost his life, suffocated by the weight of the young mother’s body. The cry of pain of the young tear through the corridors of the ward. Now the prosecutor’s office in Rome has opened an investigation into the tragedy. And the prosecutor proceeds with the accusation of manslaughter, with the offended mother in the investigation. According to the protocol, in fact, it would have been the hospital staff who had to supervise that the newborn came brought back to the cot after breastfeeding.
