He always comes back to surprise us, James Webb. With its jaw-dropping images, which appear to come from a Christopher Nolan film, NASA’s space telescope unveils previously unseen details of the slow transformation taking place in the Chariot Wheel galaxy.

A collision between a large spiral galaxy and another smaller galaxy, generated two rings that expand outward like the ripples created by a stone in the pond. This magnificent spectacle took place 500 million light years in the constellation of the Sculptor.

New revelations on the Black Holes

The James Webb telescope has also succeeded in this imprint. The NASA instrument has pinpointed individual stars and star-forming regions with extreme precision. Allowing you to unravel the behavior of the black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The Chariot wheel galaxy has a core containing an enormous amount of hot dust, with the brightest areas hosting gigantic young star clusters. The outer ring, which has been expanding for about 440 million years, is dominated by star formation and supernovae. As this ring expands, it penetrates the surrounding gas and triggers the birth of new stars.

The revelations of the telescope

Jemes Webb isn’t the only telescope that has set its sights on the Wagon Wheel. Over the years, other space instruments such as Nasa’s Hubble and ESA have tried to peer into the galaxy. But the large amount of dust that envelops it had prevented us from studying it in detail.

Unlike his siblings, James Webb has a new advanced technology available: Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam).

This infrared light technology allowed the telescope to show the differences in the distribution of younger stars compared to older ones.


In addition to this infrared camera, the James Webb has another technology capable of measuring the chemical components present in celestial bodies.

Thanks to the MIRI tool, regions rich in hydrocarbons have been identified and other chemical compounds (besides silicate dust) that form a series of spiral rays. According to experts, this series of rays would represent the “skeleton” of the galaxy.
