The Si svigna project is renewed, which for years has been combining the G. Montalto prison and the Umberto I wine school, with the aim of cultivating the one hectare vineyard inside the structure. With the grapes, mainly Nebbiolo and Barbera, about 2 thousand bottles a year are produced with the Valelapena brand which is vinified in the experimental cellar of the Albese school and then distributed to the public.

In recent days, the harvested grapes were delivered and pressed in the presence of the Councilor with responsibility for Agriculture of the Municipality of Alba, the headmaster Antonella Germini, the guarantor for the prisoners of the Piedmont Region Bruno Mellano, the agrotechnician affiliated with the prison of Alba, Giovanni Bertello, the project manager, Bruno Morcaldi.

The 2022 harvest within the walls of the Alba prison was excellent and abundant. The grapes have been entrusted to the hands of Professor Enrico Orlando, director of the experimental winery, and of the students of the 5th classes, who will follow the vinification and the production process until bottling. Valelapena will be on the market starting next summer.

Since July 2021, the G. Montalto prison has welcomed inmates from the Casa Lavoro project. It was they who harvested the rows within the structure this year. About fifteen of them last year also participated in the operator course which ended with the exam and qualification.

The vineyard, the hazelnut grove with 130 plants, the 8,000 square meter garden, the greenhouse and the 4,000 meter garden together represent the fulcrum of the training project inside the prison linked to agriculture and aimed at job placements. The management of the prison actively collaborates in the project, with the director Giuseppina Piscioneri, the training body Foundation Casa di Carità arts and crafts onlus, the Umberto I Institute, the oenological school of Alba, and Syngenta which supplies agropharmaceuticals and seeds, as well as to have carried out promotional activities related to the initiative, including a book and some exhibitions.

.

The Councilor with responsibility for Agriculture of the Municipality of Alba underlines how the project is a good example of synergy able to actively involve more realities of the territory. In a land like Langhe and Roero, developing initiatives with a social purpose that use agriculture as a tool for reintegrating people in difficulty into work is an opportunity and a pride.
