A cruise ship flying the Norwegian flag, the ‘Viking Sea’ with 870 passengers and about 200 crew members on board was the subject of a mishap, due to severe weather, which could have more serious consequences. The 228-meter-long boat broke the mooring cables by crossing and resting the keel on the sandy bottom, thus avoiding ending up against the cliff in front of the Guardian Pier of the Romagna port. The recovery operations lasted over 4 hours. To keep the boat in trim, 5 tugs were used.

The dynamics of the accident

Around 8 this morning it was regularly moored at the Cruise Terminal of the port, before being hit by strong gusts of bora, of absolutely extraordinary intensity up to 160 km per hour. In the water, for rescue operations, also the Coast Guard patrol boat and the men of the mooring group. The Port Authority and the nautical technical services promptly intervened. After the “rescue” operations, the Viking Sea is re-moored in its position and when the weather conditions allow it, she will leave the port of Ravenna.
