The new ‘Colleoni’ diesel-electric hybrid train entered service on Monday 12 September on the Brescia-Piadena-Parma line. They are state-of-the-art trains, financed by the Lombardy Region and destined for non-electrified lines.

“This debut – highlighted the regional councilor for transport – is a further tangible sign of the commitment of the Lombardy Region, which has invested 2 billion euros to renew the fleet thanks to the purchase of 222 new trains, of which 68 are already in service. Of the 222 new trains, 30 are of the Colleoni type ”.

Innovative technology for the new diesel-electric diesel train

Colleoni also brings innovation to non-electrified lines. One of the peculiarities is that the new trains, thanks to batteries and diesel-electric traction, can enter and leave stations with reduced emissions. In this way, there will also be a significant reduction in noise in the areas of railway yards. The hybrid train represents a great step forward on the topic of environmental sustainability. Compared to the current diesel fleet, fuel consumption is reduced by 30%.

New rolling stock on the Brescia-Parma

“For Brescia-Parma – underlined the councilor for transport – it is the first step towards a progressive and important change: in the coming weeks, further new trains will be introduced on the line, which will then also reach the Pavia basin. On the Brescia-Parma, the latest generation convoys will replace the old Aln 668, which circulated from the 70s and 80s: old trains inherited from the central state. With the investment of the Region, the travel experience of users improves ”.

Starting from Tuesday 13 September, the new Colleoni will make 6 trips a day on the line, on which the overall service is 34 trips a day.

The ‘Colleoni’ is sustainable, comfortable and avant-garde: 168 seats and 8 positions for bicycles in the standard 3-car composition.

Better performance and sustainability with the hybrid train

The two new generation diesel engines that power the train are also low-emission and allow for better performance. In detail: + 20% in acceleration, with a particularly significant reduction in travel times in a reality like Lombardy, with numerous and close stations; energy recovery during braking and also less weight on the wheel axles, thanks to which you save on infrastructure maintenance costs.

Environmental benefits and comfort

Compared to the current fleet, fuel consumption is reduced by 30% with an estimated savings of 3 million euros per year. The lower CO2 emissions are also very significant: -12,400 tons / year (like 8,600 cars). In addition, the positioning of the engines in the center of the train ensures great comfort for passengers. In this way noises and vibrations are not transmitted to the carriages. Finally, the use of recyclable materials is high, equal to approximately 93%.

Security and accessibility

The train is equipped with LED lighting, 220V and USB sockets, passenger information system, video surveillance cameras and a light assistance system that signals door opening and closing. Furthermore, accessibility for people with reduced mobility is made easier by sliding platforms, which compensate for the distance between the door and the platform.
