POWER – Anesthetists, cardiologists, psychiatrists, gynecologists, radiologists, nephrologists, and over 20 emergency doctors are missing. According to the needs plans of the regional health authorities, more than 300 medical managers are missing. Furthermore, the Covid emergency has accentuated the shortage of white coats and at this rate Basilicata will find itself with absolutely insufficient general practitioners to cover the territory: from 2018 to the whole of 2021, 50% of Lucanian doctors have hung their stethoscope to the nail. And 2022 will be the “black year” with 57 retirements. In this context, the appeal launched by the doctor of Brienza (Potenza), Pasquale Scelzo, who asked to give the possibility to continue the service to those over 70 years old, fits. In particular, Scelzo proposes that general practitioners who so wish should be allowed an extension of the agreement for 2-3 years. «The shortcomings – he says – cannot be the increase in the number of patients beyond the limit to the doctors of the National Health Service or to the doctors of continuity of assistance (doctors on call). The workload between the clinic, bureaucracy, home visits, the Covid pandemic is already burdensome and unsustainable with 1,000-1,500 patients for which these solutions would only be to the detriment of the health care provided, increasing – concludes Scelzo – the stress of health workers “.
