(ANSA) – TRIESTE, 02 SEPT – The book “The pact. Stalin, Hitler and the story of a deadly alliance. 1939-1941” (Einaudi, 2021) by Claudia Weber won the ninth edition of the Friuli History Award. The volume is dedicated to one of the most extraordinary twists and turns in the diplomatic history of the twentieth century: the non-aggression pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union of August 1939, which had terrible consequences for Eastern Europe and especially for Jews, Poles. and Ukrainians. Themes that help today to better understand today’s complexity and contradictions in Eastern Europe and that have fascinated the 550 readers – from Italy and other countries – of the popular jury that annually decides the winner of the Prize.
Claudia Weber is Professor of History of Contemporary Europe at the Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt on the Oder. In second place was Paolo Macry, author of “Stories of fire. Patriots, militants, terrorists” (Il Mulino, 2021); third Gianluca Falanga with “Dark diplomacy. Secret services and terrorism in the Cold War” (Carocci, 2021) The awards ceremony will be held on Tuesday 6 September (6.30 pm) and Palazzo Garzolini di Toppo Wassermann in Udine, and will also be the occasion to remember the President of Friuli Storia, the journalist and writer Giulio Giustiniani.
The awarding of the Prize takes place in two phases: the scientific jury composed among other things by Ernesto Galli della Loggia, Paolo Pezzino, Tommaso Piffer, selects the three finalists, then a popular jury establishes the winner. (HANDLE).
