Story by Giuseppe Stipi, a retiree with an infallible memory

“That day the square wasn’t really full. There must have been, I think, a few hundred people. I was there by chance, I was a tourist visiting Bologna”. Giuseppe Stipi, eighty-year-old originally from Bagnolo Mella (Brescia), now living in Bologna, tells of “the time that Gorbachev’s Russia made a gift to Bologna from the Bell of Peace”.
Also thanks to his memory, with an almost infallible precision despite the many years that have passed, a piece of its history has been returned to the Emilia-Romagna capital, which becomes current following the death, two days ago, of the former general secretary of the Party Communist of the Soviet Union. Forged in granite and built with reconverted war material – “50 kilos of titanium, a precious metal used for missiles and cannons, the bell renamed” of Peace “was brought from Moscow to represent the ‘noble’ potential of transforming the military into a peace industry, in fact, a gift to the Bolognese and to Cardinal Biffi, archbishop at the time, as a sign of the desire to start a new chapter of relations between our countries, after the years of the Cold War.
“I was intrigued – says Stipi – by the fact that by now a stone was being put on such a senseless war between Italy and the Soviet Union, at a time when the coffins containing the bodies of our soldiers who died during the Second World War”. “So intrigued – he adds – that I believe that if today I heard that ringing again, I would be able to recognize it”. A “grave, but not sad” ringing: this is how he describes it. And it is also thanks to the memory of the gardener, now retired, that that toll was heard again, not in Bologna but in Monte Sole (Marzabotto), where the Peace Bell was transferred and where it was made to ring on the 25th. last March, in the presence of the current archbishop Matteo Zuppi and the mayor of Marzabotto Valentina Cuppi, with a prayer to ask for an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
