CATANZARO (ITALPRESS) – The separate collection of paper and cardboard is increasing in Calabria. In 2021, over 97,000 tons of paper and cardboard were collected, with an increase of over 5,200 tons compared to the previous year which is worth an overall growth of 5.7%. This was announced by the 27th Annual Report on the separate collection and recycling of paper and cardboard in Italy released by Comieco, the National Consortium for the Recovery and Recycling of Cellulose-based Packaging. “Calabria proves year after year to be an environmentally conscious region that actively participates in the growth of collection in the South” declares Carlo Montalbetti, General Manager of Comieco “Every citizen of the region has sorted almost 52 kg, a figure higher than the average in the South ( 46.9 kg / inhabitant) and the interception of the cellulose fraction on the total waste produced reached 13.5%, a result among the best at national level “. In Calabria in 2021 Comieco managed 59,245 tons of paper and cardboard for recycling, equal to 60.8% of the total collection. The 357 municipalities under agreement were paid fees of over € 5.2 million. Analyzing the data in detail, only the province of Crotone suffered a slight decline in collection due to the difficulty of post-covid restarts. All the others on the rise, recorded a positive sign: – Province of Catanzaro: almost 22,000 tons of paper and cardboard collected, per capita at 63.4 kg; – Province of Cosenza: over 42,000 tons collected with a per capita collection of 62.4 kg; – Province of Crotone: more than 6,700 tons of differentiated paper and cardboard, per capita of 40.3 kg; – Province of Reggio Calabria: over 19,000 tons collected with a per capita of 36.3 kg / inhabitant-year; – Province of Vibo Valentia: almost 7,000 differentiated tons, per capita collection of 45.4 Kg. Quantity and quality of differentiated collection of paper and cardboard in Italy On a national level, in 2021 the differentiated collection of paper and cardboard outlines a situation characterized from a positive trend everywhere. Over 3.6 million tons of cellulosic material have been differentiated overall across the country with the overall volumes of municipal waste growing by over 110,000 tons (+ 3.2%) and the country’s average per capita exceeds for the first time time i 60 kg / person.
