MESSINA – They stop the car in the motorway lay-bys and unload bags of waste: they are what are now defined as ‘eco-vandals’ and who sometimes, as evidenced by some images, do not even disdain to urinate before leaving the parking area by skidding . There are already dozens of complaints filed by Sicilian Motorways against motorists who leave waste in the parking areas of the A18 and A 20 motorways, immortalized by surveillance cameras.
The types of waste abandoned are the most diverse, from unsorted urban waste at home to bulky materials of all kinds. It is – says Autostrade Siciliane – a phenomenon now widespread throughout Italy, but which in Sicily records alarming growth figures. Sicilian motorways “for the next few months it plans to further intensify investments in parking areas with a greater number of reclamation interventions and an increase in video traps distributed on the Messina-Palermo, Messina-Catania and Syracuse-Gela motorways” .
