There are 56,166 new infections from Covid recorded in the last 24 hours, according to data from the Ministry of Health. Yesterday there were 53,905. On the other hand, the victims are 75, up from 50 yesterday. A total of 248,042 swabs were performed, including antigenic and molecular, with the positivity rate of 22.6%, up from 21.8% yesterday. On the other hand, 216 patients are hospitalized in intensive care, the same number as yesterday in the balance between entries and exits. The daily admissions are 31. The hospitalized in the ordinary wards are 5,064, or 117 more than yesterday.
A surge in infections from Covid-19, with an increase of + 58.9% in a week. Ordinary hospitalizations (+ 14.4%) and intensive care (+ 12.6%) also increased. The Gimbe Foundation monitoring for the week 15-21 June. There is an increase in new infections (255,442) in all Italian regions. In 105 provinces there is a percentage increase in new cases and the incidence exceeding 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 16 provinces. Therefore, hospital indicators are rising with the medical area which marks an increase of over 700 Covid beds in 10 days. On the other hand, deaths drop, which mark -19%.
According to data from the National Agency for Regional Health Services (Agenas) of 22 June 2022, the percentage of places in ‘non-critical area’ hospital wards occupied by patients with Covid-19 rose to 8% within 24 hours in Italy. The value was 4% exactly one year ago. The employment of intensive care units, on the other hand, remained stable at 2%, again within 24 hours (a year ago it was also 4%). This is what emerges from the data of the National Agency for Regional Health Services (Agenas) of 22 June 2022, published today.
In the week 15-21 June, the weekly monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation, the percentage increase in new cases of Covid-19 is recorded in all Regions: from + 31.3% in Valle D’Aosta to + 91.5% in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Compared to the previous week, only 2 Provinces recorded a percentage reduction in new cases: Caltanissetta -10.2% and Vibo Valentia -10.2%, while the Provinces in which an increase was recorded rose from 99 to 105 (from + 5.6% of Crotone to + 131.7% of Reggio Calabria).
The vaccination campaign has stalled: as of June 22, 6.85 million people over the age of 5 have not received even a dose of vaccine, of which 4.03 million are currently vaccinated and 2.82 million temporarily protected as they have been cured of Covid-19 for less than 180 days. There is also a decrease in the number of new vaccinated people, who are 2,981 compared to 3,253 in the previous week (-8.4%). In particular, 5.51 million Italians are without third dose and 4.05 million frail are without fourth dose. This was revealed by the monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation for the week 15-21 June.
The Foundation therefore calls for caution, stressing that abolishing the isolation of positives is “unscientific and risky for public health”. “The progressive diffusion of the BA.4 and BA.5 variants – affirms the president Gimbe Nino Cartabellotta – has contributed to a clear recovery of viral circulation throughout the country with already evident effects also on hospitals: in particular, in the medical area where in 10 days there is an increase of over 700 beds occupied by Covid patients.
Consequently, the Foundation calls for caution for at least three reasons. First of all, the number of positives (about 600 thousand) is largely underestimated due to the massive use of do-it-yourself swabs with partial notification of positive tests; secondly, it is impossible to estimate the extent of this early summer rise and the time to reach the peak; finally, the stalemate in the vaccination campaign has generated a population currently susceptible to very widespread infection “.
Consequently, in this phase of the pandemic, Gimbe warns, “it is essential to reduce viral circulation, in particular by wearing the mask indoors, especially if crowded and / or poorly ventilated and in conditions of large gatherings even outdoors. Institutions, for their part, must strengthen the vaccination campaign in all people at risk of serious illness, increasing coverage with the third dose in over 50s and with the fourth dose in all vulnerable people included in the audience. Last not but least, avoid disorienting the population with unscientific and risky proposals for public health, such as the abolition of isolation for the positives “.
