His excursion companion is serious: he is the manager of the Malga Caldenave refuge. Rescue is difficult
They had left just before lunchtime to go ski mountaineering. Guido Trevisan and Arianna Sittonirespectively 46 and 30 years old, had decided to climb towards the summit and in the meantime enjoy the breathtaking views of the Campelle Valley, a few kilometers higher than the Malga Caldenave refuge managed by the Venetian entrepreneur, who in 2020 had his Pian dei Fiacconi refuge destroyed by an avalanche. Once you reach an altitude of 2,100 meters, in one area further downstream than the Forcella Ravetta, the two were suddenly hit by an avalanche and thus remained stranded. She completely buried in snow, he only half. Unfortunately for Sittoni there was nothing that could be done, while Trevisan, seriously injured, remained conscious and would only have suffered a broken leg.
The intervention of the rescuers started around 15.30, when the telephone of the Borgo Valsugana carabinieri station rang. On the other side was Alice Dassatti, Guido’s wife who, alarmed, raised the alarm. Her husband was supposed to come home to Pergine in the afternoon, before 4 pm, to run some errands, but he never did. So, around 4.15pm they intervened the rescuers from the Alpine Rescue (with two operators from the Bassa Valsugana station hoisted on the spot), the carabinieri from the companies of Castel Telvana and Borgo Valsugana, the voluntary firefighters from Scurelle and the permanent ones from Trento, as well as the rescuers from 118. After having made drones fly in an attempt to locate the place, it was then the air ambulance to find out Sittoni’s body. But right from the start the rescue maneuvers were very difficult: the fault of the fresh snow and the rain that hit the area. Nightfall complicated the rescue operations. Precisely for this reason, the rescue teams from the Lower Valsugana, Levico, Tesino and Pergine stations reached the site of the avalanche by land, using quads and snowmobiles for a stretch and then skis.
The rescuers managed to find Guido Trevisan first, while the body of Arianna Sittoni, buried by the snow, was recovered on the morning of 25 January. If you look at his Instagram profile, the post from early July is heartbreaking, written a few days after the Marmolada tragedy that caused eleven victims. Then Arianna had written: «We were right there, south of the Marmolada, unaware of everything we climbed that face while on the other side a huge piece of cap was peeling off carrying everything and everyone with him, so close but so far away…». And again: «The mountain is not commanded – he concluded in that post that sees it happy with a boy – sometimes you are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time…». Unfortunately indeed as happened on Monday afternoon. Carried on foot with a stretcher to his Malga Caldenave refuge, Trevisan was then transported by ambulance to the valley where the air ambulance was waiting for him with which he arrived at the Santa Chiara hospital in Trento shortly before midnight..
