In the small town of Valle d’Agrò Campana for war missing

(ANSA) – PALERMO, JAN 15 – The “Bell for peace” of Antillo, the innermost municipality of Valle d’Agrò, in the Messina area, located on Mount Pizzo Monaco, has for years now become the symbol of the town of about 800 inhabitants. Dedicated to those lost in all wars, the idea of the bell was born in 1983 on the initiative of a group of personalities who wanted not to forget the many missing people in war conflicts in the history of humanity. For its construction, a committee was set up which, also thanks to contributions from the municipality and various bodies and associations and private citizens, commissioned the “Marinelli Pontificia Fonderia” in 1992 to produce a large bell weighing 5 tons and with a circumference of 6 meters. The big bell arrived in the village in April 1993, after being blessed, in the presence of a delegation of the committee and of the municipality of Antillo, by the then Pope John Paul II. Over the years the committee and the Municipality of Antillo have been involved in organizing important conferences on peace which have seen the participation of experts and professors from important international universities. In the wake of these initiatives, also considering that the municipality of Antillo was declared a “City for Peace” with a special council resolution, the Committee launched the proposal to establish a “Centre for conflict resolution”. In 2007, after a 14-year wait, the moment so longed for by the Antillean community and by the entire Ionian area arrived: the great “Bell for Peace”, on 21 September – World Day of Peace announced by the UN – made its first tolls of peace resound throughout the Agrò valley. Great satisfaction for the Antillean community and for the other populations of the area for this extraordinary moment of cultural and social growth which can also represent an opportunity for tourist and economic development. In the intentions of the municipal administration and the Committee, the installation of the large bell constitutes the fulcrum for the creation of a “Centre for the resolution of conflicts” with the ambitious, but perhaps not impossible, aim of creating a pole for peace in the Valle d’Agro.
