The path of the States General of Culture continues “Make Culture Count. Creative Tuscany 2030”. While the launch of the second phase is approaching, with initiatives in the main Tuscan cities starting from 1 December, the results of the first were presented: over a thousand applications and forms filled in on the online platform ‘Make Culture count. Toscana Creativa 2030’ within the website of the Regional Council of Tuscany, which has recorded over 12,000 accesses from August to today.

“This path – said the president of the Tuscany Region Eugene Giani – it is a very important moment of verification and analysis of the world of culture, from libraries to live entertainment via museums, the world of books, theater and cinema”. “We know – he added – that culture has been one of the sectors most sacrificed by the pandemic, but culture is also passion and enthusiasm, so after this forced stop we have seen the flourishing of new initiatives and a highly effective recovery. Now we have to record the sounds and understand how the Region can be close to operators and cultural institutions. We need to understand how our request for differentiated autonomy over cultural heritage can help this world, establish synergies, grasp the meaning of a region with a high tourist vocation that closely associates culture with the world of tourism. After this extensive consultation campaign, which involved more than a thousand operators, we can start from 1 December with a new operational phase which, starting from Livorno, will touch all the cities of Tuscany”.

“Tuscany has always been a land of art and culture – commented the president of the regional council Antonio Mazzeo – but culture changes over time. The thousands of adhesions show that the path of confrontation we have taken is the right one. I think that these months of listening and the next ones, which will then serve to make a proposal that is shared as widely as possible, highlight a new way of working, as happened with the General States of Health, which then produced a guideline to which the Giunta is now giving concrete and government answers. Too often politics decides first and then communicates we have decided to listen to the whole world of culture and then decide”.

The president of the culture commission goes into the details of the initiative Christine Giachi: “Today – he says – we presented the first results, which we will analyze in the second phase with the operators of the sector and the workers in the appointments that will involve us in the coming months, both in hearings and in initiatives of the commission. Some are already on the calendar. On December 1st we will be in Livorno, with an appointment on live music with the promoters of Tuscany, on December 3rd we are organizing a meeting with the banking foundations that deal with culture and support it in Tuscany, while three days later, on the 6th, the Democratic Party group will present a survey it commissioned by offering it to the States General, a survey on cultural consumption and fruition”.

“A lot of energy – adds Giachi – converges to give legs to this beautiful project of the Regional Council and Council, which wants to build strategies on cultural policies for the coming years. The online phase involved many operators and workers, over a thousand, and many of them filled out the questionnaires offering us lots of data from which very important elements have already emerged, such as the fact that youth and female employment is predominant in this sector, therefore a sector of strategic development for employment in our territory”. “The events on live entertainment – he concluded – will be an opportunity to resume, together with the Toscana Entertainment Foundation which shares this path, the work started last spring with the States General on live entertainment. With Cristina Scaletti, president of FTS, we will work on the issues raised by the operators of the entertainment world in that venue”.

In addition to President Giachi, the Vice President of the Commission was also present at the presentation Luciana Bartolini And Silvia Noferiregional councilor, with representatives of the trade unions in the sector.

The leaders of the instrumental bodies of the Region involved also took part in the initiative. “The States General of Culture – he explained Jacopo DiPassio, president of Fondazione Sistema Toscana – were designed to photograph the dimension of a sector, the cultural one, which requires close and constant links with the institutions. Fondazione Sistema Toscana supported the Region and the Regional Council of Tuscany by cooperating in the collection of numbers and faces of Tuscan cultural operators. We did this, on the one hand by modulating the questionnaires, given the non-homogeneous level of training of the staff, on the other by pushing the regional institutions to regulate new sectors of intervention in the cultural sphere, knowing that we are dealing with operators, often from the third sector or associations, who need to feel the institutions close to their work path”.

Finally, the director of IRPET intervened Nicola Sciclone, which illustrated the analysis made by the institute of the results of the questionnaires (see attached data sheet). ““Culture demands and employs young and qualified work – he explained – Workers in the sector, despite discontinuous career paths and the difficulties associated with relatively low wages, do not show any intention of changing their working sector. But they need the attention of public support, not just financially. This process of listening to a sector which makes up around 4% of Tuscan employment and which activates around 2.4 points of GDP and which contributes to the formation of collective conscience, an awareness which is part of the identity of a place, is positive. An equally distributed cultural offer is an important element for building the identity of the different places in Tuscany”.
