Organic agriculture holds Puglia and Sicily together in the new challenges of the 2023-2027 European programming for the rural development of the territories. The fifth stage of the roadshow of the National Rural Network “Armonie di Territori”, hosted by the Puglia Region in the Kursaal Santalucia theater in Bari, fits into this virtuous groove.
Puglia is the second region in Italy for agricultural area devoted to organic farming and third for the intensity of RDP expenditure with Measure 11 of the current programming. This has a twofold objective: to encourage the conversion to organic farming of areas cultivated with conventional or integrated farming methods and to maintain organic farming methods and practices. The monitoring of the Rural Development Program 2014-2022 of the Puglia Region reports for Measure 11 as of 11 November 2022 as many as 8,016 projects financed for a total amount of 330,606,738.43 euros, equal to almost 90% of the financial allocation.

What emerged in the round table promoted as part of the Armonie di Territori roadshow is the close relationship between the use of RDP funds and the increase in areas dedicated to organic farming: specifically in Puglia in 2013 there were 154,758.82 hectares organic, today they are 305,864.94. There were 5,368 companies in 2013, today they are 11,414.
The increase in adherence to organic integrated quality schemes also fits fully into the scenario of the PSN, the National Strategic Plan which, starting from 1 January 2023, will see organic farming increasingly central to the rural development of the territories.

“We can be protagonists of a rural development capable of producing healthy food, which declines respect for the territories in a real way and produces income – declared the Councilor for Agriculture, Donato Pentassuglia, on the sidelines of the roadshow – and this was demonstrated in their invitation to choose the land, given to the students who participated in the fifth stage of Armonie di Territori, entrepreneurs directly from every corner of Puglia. They recounted their experience supported by RDP funds and how they chose organic farming as a characterizing feature of their work and productions, specifically olive, fruit and cereal crops. A choice of field, in every sense”.
