“Due to maintenance that has not been done for decades, a cemetery of known fallen has been transformed, thanks to the Municipality of Modena, into a shrine of unknown fallen, in fact no name can be read on the tombstones anymore”.
With these words the Military Studies Association of Emilia Romagna (Asmer) raises the case of the state of decay of the monumental cemetery of San Cataldo di Modena in the part dedicated to the fallen of the First World War. Of the 957 gravestones present, President Giulio Verrecchia points out, “the only one that has been restored is that of a fallen from the British colonies. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission intervened in Modena, in this small corner forgotten by our institutions, to restore dignity to the burial ground. of one of their fallen. All this is tremendously shameful. ” The association, appealing to the Municipality of Modena to carry out the restoration, announces that this year it will not affix the tricolor cockades on the tombstones: “Until that cemetery will return to the conditions of being able to be defined as a military shrine and no longer a monument to shame”.
