Tatjana Patitz, from beginnings to stardom

Protagonist of dozens of covers, photographed by Peter Lindbergh together with her cult colleagues of that decade, Tatjana Patitz had chosen to keep to the margins of that glamorous world to which she didn’t feel she belonged entirely. «I have never sold my soul», she said in one of her last interviews, in 2020. Born in Hamburg to an Estonian mother and a German father, she had participated in the Elite Model Look in Stockholm in 1983, at the age of 17 , finishing third and winning a trip to Paris and a fixed-term contract. It was Peter Lindbergh, iconic fashion photographer, who noticed her and chose her for the famous shot of her portraying six supermodels on the beach in Malibu, all dressed in a simple white shirt. From what comes what and George Michael chose the same cast of models for his video that later became a cult: Freedom ’90.

The last years

More reluctant to participate in the limelight than the others, Tatjana had chosen to live in California to be closer to nature and its animals. In her social posts she has many horse rides, her dogs and her family. «Tatjana was the symbol of European chic» according to Anna Wintour. It’s with Jonah her last public picture of her taken by Tina Barney in late 2019. Speaking about her son last year, Patitz said she was her “Source of happiness.”
