Up and down the villages of Valcuvia, where you can find the beauty of nature, culture and art

Five days and nine countries visited: the tour Go Around in “my” Valcuvia it was tiring but the tiredness was well rewarded by the many, extraordinary, gems discovered or rediscovered during my journey. The centers of the valley have many points in common: the mountain, first of all, which is a historical resource with still so much to offer but at the same time represents an unknown given the hydrogeological problems it brings with it. And then the strong link with water, represented by mills, wash houses, bridges and so on. The historic villas, the links with craftsmanship and agriculture are other characteristics that link these villages with a small population but eager to show off their beauties.

Cabiaglio Castle people 4 of 13

But be careful to think that here nature and history are isolated peculiarities: in every town, in every hamlet, there is a certain cultural and social liveliness – despite all the difficulties of the case – and sometimes amazing stories are hidden. Of unique and capable people, from Valcuvia, to reach all over the world. And amaze him.

Cabiaglio Castle - Ronchelli Palace

A very ancient town, with just 500 inhabitants, relatively isolated in the sense that the central nucleus and the nearest ones are a few kilometers away and are separated by woods. But also a country that has been able to reinvent itself and relaunch itself: traditional activities coexist here – the work of the chestnut growers is wonderful! – and linked to history and the land with strong choices linked to social issues. With an active presence of young people that is not taken for granted in areas of this type.

Orino - The historic cellars of the Orino Smart Village project

An ancient castle that rises in the woods, a series of cellars that are being transformed into a museum, and then so much goodness offered by nature such as the ancient lime tree, the Source of fresh water or the typical apples of the place. Orino has only 800 inhabitants but is intercepting a demand for slow tourism thanks to interesting ideas, a small but functional offer of hospitality and a network of paths that allow you to experience the mountain and its beauties up close. With the final touch of dedicating a small museum-library dedicated to the dialect.

Azzio - The church of the Convent

In our tour we rarely went inside the companies but those we met in Azzio – a town of about 800 inhabitants – are worth telling. Mascioni Organi is a world-class excellence and, all in all, it is quite well known but for example the Pianezza Luigi best represents those small businesses where quality reigns supreme so much that it is also chosen by maison high fashion. In both cases, the archive plays a fundamental role: the past as an engine for the future.

Cuvio - Ancient walnut press

A summary of what Valcuvia represents can be found in Cuvio: here there are important civil (Palazzo Litta) and religious buildings, waterways and related activities (mills, sawmills …), recreational activities (bowling, theater, band ) and cultural even with a modern outlook; and then some companies and operators linked to tourism who look with interest to the future and to those travelers, often foreigners, who like to stop here and enjoy the local nature and history.

Cuveglio - American Southwest Museum in Cavona

It is the first important center, in the sense that life in the surrounding area gravitates around it thanks to the commercial activities that make up for the scarcity of large companies. Cuveglio, like others, extends between different hamlets, each of which has its own important history: Canonica is a religious seat, Cavona and Vergobbio smell of ancient history and also offer jewels such as the American Southwestern Museum, a touch of the far west among the Valcuvian meadows.

Duno - The stele at the San Martino shrine

The smallest town in the province – just 150 inhabitants, the trend is growing – finds space in Piero Chiara’s novels and history books, given that one of the first partisan battles was fought on Mount San Martino. The other peculiarity, unique, is the presence of the votive temple of the doctors which – between flourishing periods and others of decline – has made the small mountain center known a little throughout the country.

Casalzuigno - Villa of the Porta Bozzolo

A “scattered” town of about 1,350 inhabitants which hosts on its territory two incredible points of historical-artistic-cultural interest. The fraction of Arcumeggia lived memorable years when it became the first painted village in Italy with many great masters of the time called to fresco the town. A legacy that continues and is evolving thanks to some initiatives that are coming to life in the ancient streets: a diamond is the Sangalleria with the permanent display of analogue photographic equipment with very rare pieces.
Going down to Casalzuigno, here is Villa Della Porta Bozzolo: a complex of extraordinary beauty which, thanks to the intervention and commitment of the FAI – Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano – is experiencing a new golden age. A place that everyone should visit sooner or later.

Brenta tour 2022 places

Those who do not know Brenta at all, cross it at great speed on the “new road” that climbs from Cittiglio to Valcuvia. Those who know little about it, perhaps take the ancient road that cuts through the ancient core. But Brenta should be better known because its inhabitants, less than 2 thousand, have been able to give a strong and clear address: art to embellish the village and party areas to attract convivial and social moments. The result is that, between the town and San Quirico, Brenta has two large parks for events while the tourist, often foreign, is fascinated by being able to tour an ancient Lombard town and enjoys finding small and significant pieces of art at every corner of the house.

Cittiglio tour 2022 places

The Municipality is larger than the others – it is close to 4 thousand souls (3,795) – and has a hospital at its center which also acts as an attractive pole for numerous economic activities developed in its surroundings. But above all Cittiglio, which develops in different hamlets, has proved to be a forge of sometimes incredible stories, told almost with modesty by its protagonists. There is the small company that prints watermarks for passports all over the world, there is the nursery that supplied the Christmas tree in Rome and Milan, there is the family of chandeliers that “illuminated” the large hotel of Zermatt. And then a mysterious villa linked to a fascist hierarch (who, perhaps, one day Churchill also knocked) and an enchanted rose garden in Vararo where the secrets of the cultivation of one of the most loved flowers are kept. And in all this we have not yet mentioned cycling and that great phenomenon (and sir) that was Alfredo Binda.
