Smartphone, battery-saving tricks: it lasts longer

Being able to understand how to preserve the battery of your smartphone is the goal of many. Not surprisingly, it is a topic at the top of the list of user searches. Everyone would like to know the righteous behaviors to be adopted but, at the end of meticulous wanderings on the web, sometimes also conducted in international portals, most desist from this desire and let time take its course.

The doubts, in fact, instead of dissipating, multiply. Many sites, as many (conflicting) sentences; each supported by a specific scientific study. After a careful examination, which also took into account the advice provided by the producers, here is one guide definitive to safeguard the battery life of a device as much as possible.

Tips for extending the battery of a smartphone

The lithium-ion batteries of modern devices – even the most expensive – have a very limited duration and survival (Pixabay)

Some will remember – with nostalgia – the imperishable nickel batteries of cell phones forerunners of smartphones: despite the constant use of that primordial device, one recharge a week was often enough. Unfortunately, one cannot live only with pleasant memories, it is also necessary to deal with the harsh reality: the lithium ion batteries of modern devices – even the most expensive – have a very limited duration and survival.

If the device is more than a year old, the short battery life could be the first sign of its inexorable aging. There are two ways: to opt for its replacement or to follow some tips to prolong its survival. For best results, it is good to take these practices into account since first day of use.

Pay attention to the temperature

There temperature has a great impact on the device’s battery: extreme ones (above 35 ° C or below zero) have a negative impact and decrease its duration faster.

The first rule to memorize and transcribe in large letters (and the most important of all) is: keep the device distant from direct sunlight and do not expose it to freezing temperatures. In general, between the two extremes, excessive heat affects battery capacity far more than cold. The ideal is a cool place and al shelter from humidity.

Partial download vS full download: the never-ending challenge

Exist two currents of thoughtor rather, polarization is often proposed between those who affirm that it is advisable to connect the device to the charger only after having let it completely discharge and those who, on the other hand, indicate the main path in a partial discharge.

Generally this aspect is closely linked to the type of lithium batteries the device is equipped with. As a general rule, it is useful not to let the appliance discharge beyond the 30-40%: start the recharging procedure when this percentage is reached and stop it at the threshold of about 80%. Obviously these ideal indications have to deal with the practical use and the contingency of the day.

The goal is to preserve the battery, not to have 100%

The current hyper-competitive world is no longer satisfied with perfection (and even if – in a superhuman effort – it is really possible to reach it and overcome it, it is not yet clear what the benefit is). From this point of view, albeit very modern, the batteries of the devices rebel against the trend of this era and deny the logic of 100% at the expense of everything and everyone.

The stubborn attempt to always have them fully charged, it turns out harmful for their duration. The lithium ions cannot fail to absorb the overload: when fully charged, the current it should be interrupted to avoid plating (when lithium is deposited as a metal on the surface of the anode, it makes the battery more fragile)

Be wary of fast chargers and counterfeit ones and / or prices that are too low

Some devices can be charged faster using super fast chargers: this mode is the enemy of battery life. As in the case analyzed above, the risk is that we run into the dreaded lithium plating.

Likewise, although more expensive, it is always advisable to use the official chargers and prefer them to those counterfeit and / or with “suspicious” prices because they are too low. At first she will spare herself, but it is only an illusion. In the medium to long term there is no amortization, only one damage (and in addition to it also the risk of mockery): the danger is not only / so much that of ruining the battery but above all that the device can catch fire.

Other important tips

To optimize battery life, it may also be useful to:

  • to close the app in the background when you are done using them. Conversely, they will continue to consume – unnecessarily – energy;
  • deactivate the functions energy consuming (for example Wi-Fi or its search, GPS, Bluetooth and vibration) when you don’t need it;
  • to reduce there brightness screen. However, most devices allow you to take advantage of automatic adjustment;
  • to leave the battery al 50% and turn off your smartphone if you are sure you will not use it for some time (e.g. months).

Finally, remember that the aging process of the battery is inevitable: it can to delay, do not interrupt. The same manufacturers report that the batteries are designed to maintain up to 80% of their capacity for a limited number of charge cycles, approximately 500.
