It could come tomorrow the decision of the Emergency Committee (EC) of the World Health Organization (WHO), met to decide whether to declare the monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern (Pheic).
The meeting – convened by the WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus under the International Health Regulations of 2005 – began shortly after noon and takes place behind closed doors. “An official statement from the EC is not expected before Friday 24 June”, announces the Geneva-based agency.
The committee, explains WHO in a note, will inform Dg Tedros if the Monkeypox virus is to be considered Pheic. If he says yes, he will propose “rtemporary advice on how to best prevent and reduce the spread of the disease and manage the global public health response. “
